The Department of Civilisation Studies focuses on research and seminar activities based on a traditional humanistic perspective, highlighting pivotal changes in the history of mankind. The department is active in both Sweden and abroad, and has, for instance, carried out projects at Cambridge University, Harvard University and institutes and embassies in London, Rome, Helsinki and Berlin.
The three main projects of the department are currently: War and Civilisation, Nordic-Baltic Security, and the Rise and Fall of Empires. Activities are primarily pursued via the Foundation-funded Changing Character of War Programme, at Pembroke College, Oxford University, and at Engelsberg Ironworks.
The Department of Civilisation Studies also actively facilitates research exchanges between Sweden and other countries. A scholarship programme has therefore been launched to encourage studies in the field of war and civilisation. The scholarship holders normally pursue their research for two terms at Pembroke College, Oxford.
