The Department of Civilisation Studies focuses on research and seminar activities based on a traditional humanities perspective, highlighting pivotal changes in the history of mankind. Th Department is active in both Sweden and abroad, and has, for instance, implemented projects at Cambridge University, Harvard University and institutes and embassies in London, Rome, Helsinki and Berlin.
The current focus is on three areas: War and Civilisation, Nordic-Baltic Security, and the Rise and Fall of Empires. Activities are primarily pursued via the Foundation-funded Changing Character of War Programme, at Pembroke College, Oxford University, and at Engelsberg Ironworks.
The Department of Civilisation Studies also actively facilitates research exchanges between Sweden and other countries. A scholarship programme has therefore been launched to encourage studies in the field of war and civilisation. The scholarship holders normally pursue their research for two terms at Pembroke College, Oxford.
