Since 1999, the Foundation has explored past and present notions and ideas on Sweden, at home and abroad.
Seminars on the subject have been held in Avesta, Engelsberg, London and Berlin, along with a one-day conference in Vienna in spring 2017.
The purpose of Images of Sweden – Past and Present Perspectives from Austria is to examine the image of Sweden in Austria, from the Thirty Years War to today.
How have the two nations been influenced by modernism and social democracy, the policy of neutrality and the Cold War? How is Sweden perceived in Austrian media today? What are the advantages and disadvantages of an idealised image of Sweden? What are the Austrian opinions on recent migration and welfare policies in Sweden?
An essay volume with contributions from the conference in Vienna is forthcoming.
