Ax:son Johnson Centre for the Study of Classical Architecture

The Ax:son Johnson Centre for the Study of Classical Architecture at the University of Cambridge was formed as an effort to preserve and expand knowledge concerning classical architecture. The centre conducts research and education and arranges seminars on the history of classical architecture and its relevance today.

The classical style in building, which is centred on humans and their needs, underwent continuous development until the first half of the 20th century. However, because of modern mass society’s need for large-scale systems and efficiency, a new style, modernism, featuring simpler design came to dominate contemporary architecture.

The centre conducts research and education and arranges seminars on the history of classical architecture and its relevance today.

Yet in recent years, both the general public and property developers have shown growing interest in and increased demand for classical architecture. To preserve and develop knowledge about classical architecture, Ax:son Johnson Centre for the Study of Classical Architecture was formed in collaborations with the University of Cambridge. The centre conducts research and education and arranges seminars on the history of classical architecture and its importance today.
